Car Insurance Questions, Answered
Quick answers to what drivers ask most. Click to expand.
How much car insurance do I actually need?
At minimum, you need your state's required liability coverage. But experts recommend at least 100/300/100 liability plus comprehensive and collision if you have a car loan, lease, or assets to protect. The state minimum often won't cover a serious accident.
What's the fastest way to lower my premium?
Compare quotes from at least 3-5 insurers — rates for identical coverage can vary by $500-$1,500. Other quick wins: raise your deductible, bundle home + auto, ask about discounts you qualify for (good driver, low mileage, professional associations), and improve your credit score.
Does my credit score really affect my insurance rate?
Yes, in most states. Insurers use credit-based insurance scores, and drivers with poor credit pay up to 60% more than those with excellent credit. Only California, Hawaii, Massachusetts, and Michigan ban this practice.
What happens if I drive without insurance?
Penalties vary by state but typically include fines ($150-$5,000), license suspension, vehicle impoundment, and an SR-22 filing requirement that raises your rates for 3-5 years. In some states, it's a misdemeanor. If you cause an accident while uninsured, you're personally liable for all damages.
How often should I shop for new car insurance?
At least once a year at renewal time, and whenever your life changes — new car, moved, got married, teenager on your policy, or a ticket fell off your record. Rates shift constantly and insurers price risk differently, so the cheapest option last year may not be cheapest today.
